Schlieren Imaging Principle Introduction

schlieren method, also known as the Schlieren (schlieren) method, is a classic optical display technology. The basic principle is to use the principle that the refractive index gradient of light in the measured flow field is proportional to the airflow density of the flow field, and the change of the density gradient in the flow field is transformed into the change of the relative light intensity on the recording plane, so that the area with severe density changes such as shock wave and compression wave in the compressible flow field becomes an observable and distinguishable image, which is recorded. The combination of a high-speed camera with high time resolution and the method of shading becomes a high-speed shading method. In the physical experiments of detonation and shock wave, the method is used to show the flow field, the shock wave front and its propagation in transparent media, to observe the micro-material ejection from the free surface under high pressure, the wave system on the interface, the interface instability and the development of weak shock waves such as spark discharge under high pressure.
